The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a cathode for an aluminum-based energy system. Specifically, the method comprises performing an acid functionalization treatment on a graphite substrate, followed by additional microwave irradiation of the acid-functionalized graphite substrate. As a result, surface roughness and oxygen functional groups are introduced onto the surface of the graphite substrate, enabling the effective activation of persulfate without requiring any additional processing steps.
